‘People’s Pope’ no more, Pope Francis dies at 88

 

Digital Desk: Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88. He passed away after a prolonged battle with respiratory illness, including double pneumonia and kidney complications.

Elected in 2013, the Argentine-born pontiff led the Catholic Church for 12 years, becoming a global advocate for the poor, interfaith dialogue and Church reform. Despite health struggles, he appeared publicly for Easter Mass just a day before his demise.

His papacy, marked by humility and controversy, reshaped the Church’s role in a modern world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, calling him a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage. PM Modi expressed condolences to the global Catholic community.

PM Modi praised the late pontiff’s lifelong dedication to the ideals of Christ, particularly his unwavering service to the poor and suffering.

Reflecting on his personal interactions with the pope, the Prime Minister recalled being inspired by Francis’s commitment to inclusive and holistic development.

PM Modi also highlighted Pope Francis’s warmth toward India, saying his affection for the people of India will always be cherished.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, praising the late pontiff for his lifelong commitment to peace, compassion, and reform within the Catholic Church.

CMSarma lauded Pope Francis not only as a spiritual leader but as a global icon whose humility and dedication resonated far beyond the Catholic faith.

CM Sarma extended condolences to the entire Catholic community on behalf of the people of Assam.
