Greta Thunberg, on board on an aid ship, gets hit in alleged drone strike off Tunisia
Digital Desk: The Global Sumud Flotilla, an aid ship to Gaza carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and civilians from 44 countries, was struck in an alleged drone attack off the Tunisian coast on Tuesday. The vessel was part of an attempt to break Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The Portuguese-flagged boat, carrying the flotilla's steering committee, sustained fire damage to its main deck and below-deck storage, though all passengers and crew are safe, the GSF said in a statement.
A statement issued by the organisation also read, “The boat under the Portuguese flag and all passengers and crew are safe. An investigation is currently underway, and when more information is available, it will be released immediately.”
However, the claim of a drone strike on the ship was denied by Tunisian authorities.
"Reports of a drone attack have no basis in truth," a National Guard spokesman told local broadcaster Mosaique FM, adding that preliminary investigation indicated the explosion came from inside the ship.
According to a Reuters witness, following the reported strike, crowds gathered at the port of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, where the ships were docked, waving Palestinian flags and chanting "Free Palestine."
