Nepal army imposes nationwide curfew
Digital Desk: After the KP Sharma Oli government was overthrown by widespread protests, the Nepalese Army has taken over the responsibility of maintaining peace in the Himalayan nation until a new government is installed, while horrifying reports of death, damage, and arson arrive from Kathmandu.
There is a curfew in place, and the army has warned that any instances of looting, destruction, or attacks on people will result in severe consequences.
General Ashok Raj Sigdel, the Chief of the Nepalese Army Staff, has urged demonstrators to hold discussions in order to find a peaceful solution.
After an anti-government demonstration against a social media ban turned into a full-scale campaign against corruption and a lack of transparency in the administration, Nepal has seen horrifying violence for the past two days.
In response, the KP Sharma Oli administration clamped down on the demonstrations.
Widespread indignation and larger protests followed the police action that killed 19 protestors.
The demonstrators, who identify as Gen Z, pointed out the stark contrast between the living standards of the Nepalese people and the extravagant lifestyles of politicians.
When the demonstrations descended into violence, some agitators attacked politicians and government structures.
KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, despite his initial refusal to resign.
