Assam Gears Up for Poll Verdict with Counting of Votes Scheduled Monday

Digital Desk: The counting of votes for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections is scheduled to begin on May 4, with the results poised to significantly influence the state's political landscape. The pivotal election will determine whether the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can secure a third consecutive term or if the Indian National Congress (INC) can regain power in the northeastern state. Votes from all 126 assembly constituencies will be tallied at 40 counting centers across Assam's 35 districts, implemented under stringent security protocols.

The elections, which occurred on April 9, saw a notable voter turnout of 85.96% from an eligible electorate of over 2.5 crore. A total of 722 candidates are contesting, including 59 women. The INC has fielded the most candidates, totaling 99, while the BJP presented 90 candidates. Other significant parties in the fray include the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), Raijor Dal, and Assam Jatiya Parishad. Key figures in the elections include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, and Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi.

To ensure the security of the counting process, 25 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed, supported by additional state police and specialized security teams.

Results are anticipated by the evening of May 4 and are expected to shape Assam's political trajectory for the next five years, with the ruling NDA striving to maintain stability against an opposition alliance spearheaded by the Congress.
