Lily Das Malik, All India Radio’s First Assamese Woman Newsreader, Passes Away in Bengaluru

 

Digital Desk: Lily Das Malik, a veteran All India Radio newsreader and a prominent figure in Assamese broadcasting, died at the age of 90 on Sunday, May 3, in Bengaluru.

She was recognized as the first Assamese woman newsreader at All India Radio (AIR), and she made significant contributions to radio journalism and public broadcasting in Assam.

Malik was a pioneer in Assamese electronic media during a period when radio was the dominant source of news and public information in the region. Despite her vast and important career, she had primarily avoided television.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from the media community, former colleagues, and admirers, all of whom recognize her critical role in improving Assamese journalism and radio.
