UCC Bill Gets Assam Cabinet Nod, aims to establish uniform rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption

Digital Desk: In a significant move, the Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, which is set to be presented in the state Assembly on May 26.

During a media briefing post-meeting, Sarma elaborated that the Cabinet engaged in comprehensive discussions about the UCC, emphasizing that it will not apply to both the hills and plains regions of Assam.

The primary objective of the UCC is to create standardized regulations concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, aimed at ensuring equality among citizens in these social spheres. Noteworthy features of the proposed legislation include an outright prohibition of polygamy and child marriages, as well as provisions governing live-in relationships.

Importantly, the UCC will not impose uniformity in religious practices; customs associated with worship, including Namaz, temple rituals, Christian weddings, Sikh ceremonies, and other faith-specific traditions, will be exempt from the law.

This legislative initiative represents a fulfillment of a key election promise by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam, aligning with the state’s 2025 anti-polygamy statute, thereby reinforcing the government's commitment to reforming social laws in the region.
