Army soldier from Manipur killed in J&K floods
Digital Desk: In a heartbreaking incident that underscores the double burden of conflict and catastrophe, 24-year-old Jimmy N Mate, a soldier from Manipur's conflict-hit Churachandpur district, lost his life after being swept away by flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
Serving with the 5th Assam Regiment, Jimmy was stationed near the Chenab River when sudden and intense flooding struck on the night of August 28.
His unit was forced to evacuate as rising waters overran their post. Amid the darkness and chaos, Jimmy was caught in the powerful currents and went missing.
After nearly 24 hours of intensive search operations, his body was recovered on the afternoon of August 29 around 3:00 p.m., bringing a tragic end to a desperate rescue effort.
Hailing from Sahumphai village in Manipur, Jimmy was the son of Holkhothang Mate. His death comes as a second blow to his family, who had already been displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.
The Mate family is currently surviving as internally displaced persons (IDPs) in NS Khojamphai village, having lost their home to the state’s unrest.
As the country mourns his loss, tributes have poured in from across the region.
