Assam Film Shines on Global Stage; ‘kok Kok KooKKooK’ makes entry in Busan Film Festival
Digital Desk: Assamese director Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap's debut feature film 'Kok Kok Kookkook' has made its way to the 30th edition of the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, specifically to the Vision Asia section. This magic realist horror drama, produced by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) of Kolkata, tells a deeply personal yet universal story set in Guwahati, Assam.
The film explores the intense lives of migrants struggling for identity against the backdrop of a gritty yet scenic city, bringing to life Kashyap's distinctive use of magic realism and poetic imagination. Kashyap dedicates this film to the people of Assam, who once celebrated diversity without hesitation, expressing his concern that times and minds are changing. He hopes the film stands as a testament to his existence and to those who fight for identity every day.
The world premiere of 'Kok Kok Kookkook' at Busan marks a significant milestone for both Kashyap and contemporary Assamese cinema, continuing its growing recognition on the global stage.
Kashyap developed the film as his final dissertation project under the mentorship of filmmaker Dominic Sangma at SRFTI. His short films have already garnered international acclaim, with screenings at global festivals and multiple awards.
The Vision Asia section at BIFF showcases groundbreaking works from Korea and Asia, highlighting bold films from emerging voices that represent the future of Asian cinema. With the 30th Busan International Film Festival scheduled from September 17 to 26, 'Kok Kok Kookkook' is set to make a lasting impression on the global film community.
