Historic! India clinches their maiden Women's World Cup title; defeats South Africa by 52 runs

Digital Desk: India's excruciating wait for a maiden Harmanpreet Kaur and her teary-eyed teammates defeated South Africa in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday, bringing the Women's World Cup title to a close.

India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, cemented their place in cricket history by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the Women's World Cup final. The Indian team maintained composure to outperform Laura Wolvaardt's squad with a dominant all-around performance in a high-stress match.


In their semi-final matchup with the reigning champions, Australia, Kaur's team set a record to advance to the final, where they got South African team vying for their first 50-over World Cup title.

Although with nearing score of 350 runs at one point, opener Shafali Verma proved to be an unexpected hero for India, as the storming 87 was crucial to their total of 298-7.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt (101) led their strong reply with her second consecutive hundred of the tournament, but Verma also had a golden arm, taking two quick wickets that completely changed the outcome of the match.

Shefali Verma won the player-of-the-match award. Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Tournament.



India became just the fourth team to win the trophy after their breakthrough in the 13th edition of the global showcase, joining Australia (7), England (4), and New Zealand (1) as the elite of champions.
