‘Mini Bangladesh’ Row: BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi in eye of storm
Digital Desk: The recent referral of the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency in Assam as ‘mini-Bangladesh’ by BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi has stroked a political controversy with political parties, students’ bodies and other organisations criticizing the BJP MP and the government over the issue.
Koch-Rajbongshi organisations and leaders in Assam have slammed BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi for his remark.
Once influential leader of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union and former executive member of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council, Kartik Roy, has criticized BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi for calling Dhubri a mini-Bangladesh.
Speaking to the media, Roy denounced the statement as part of a larger political conspiracy and accused the BJP of using divisive tactics for electoral gains.
Roy asserted that Dhubri is historically a part of the Koch Kamtapur region and expressed concerns over alleged attempts to alter its status.
He claimed that after India's independence, three districts of the former Kamtapur territory had already been ceded to Bangladesh, and now, a conspiracy was underway to do the same with Dhubri.
Slamming the BJP, Roy alleged that the party solely engages in Hindu-Muslim politics and has failed to secure electoral success in Dhubri.
He accused the ruling party of attempting to manipulate the region’s demographics for its political advantage.
He further alleged that the government is working towards weakening and eliminating the Koch Rajbongshi community by potentially ceding Dhubri to Bangladesh.
Roy further challenged BJP, questioning its ability to deport even a single Bangladeshi national.
Notably, the controversy over Trivedi’s remark has triggered sharp reactions across political and social circles in Assam.
Protests also erupted in Barpeta district of Assam against BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi over his remark referring to Dhubri district as a mini Bangladesh.
The All Assam Minority Students’ Union staged a massive protest over MP Sudhanshu Trivedi’s mini Bangladesh remark.
The AAMSU demanded an apology from the MP for his controversial remark.
