Digital Desk: A delegation of Supreme Court judges arrived in Manipur today.
Judge BR Gavai is leading a delegation of Supreme Court judges who have traveled to Imphal, Manipur, to tour relief camps in the northeastern state beset by violence.
The judges’ delegation will visit relief camps in violence-affected Manipur.
The visit is aimed at strengthening legal and humanitarian support for the ethnic violence victims in the state.
Meanwhile, tensions emerged between legal communities in Manipur as the All Manipur Bar Association called on its Churachandpur counterpart to rescind a directive that bars a Meitei Supreme Court judge, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, from visiting the district.
Due to opposition from a local lawyers' organization, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, a member of the delegation and a member of the Meitei group, would not be visiting the Kuki-majority Churachandpur area. Instead, he will travel to Bishnupur district, according to reports.
The Churachandpur District Bar Association has justified its directive as a precaution to maintain public order and ensure the safety of the judge, citing heightened emotions and ongoing ethnic tensions in the state.
