Assam: AFSPA extended in Tinsukia, Charaideo, Sivasagar

Digital Desk: The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been extended by the Assam government for an additional six months, beginning April 1, 2025, in the districts of Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Sivasagar. Despite major advances in the state's overall security situation over the last three and a half years, this decision was made in response to ULFA (I) militant actions that continue.

However, due to significant improvements in the security situation, AFSPA has been withdrawn from the Dibrugarh area as of March 31, 2025. The extension of AFSPA in the three districts, according to the Assam administration, will support law and order and deter future terrorist activity.

The AFSPA has been extended for an additional six months in some regions of Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh by the Union government in addition to Assam. Except for 13 police station jurisdictions spread across five districts, including Imphal, Thoubal, and Bishnupur, the entire state of Manipur has been deemed a "disturbed area."

AFSPA will continue to apply in eight districts and 21 police station locations in five more districts in Nagaland. The law is still in effect in Tirap, Changlang, Longding, and three police station areas in the Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.
