Retired IAS officer Hitesh Dev Sarma, in Legal Crosshairs Over Journalist Threat Allegation
Digital Desk: The Assam government intends to take legal action against former IAS official Hitesh Dev Sarma for reportedly threatening journalist Rana Deka and his child. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister, highlighted that threats to journalists are unacceptable.
The issue revolves around former Assam IAS official Hitesh Dev Sarma allegedly threatening writer Rana Deka with death and intimidating Deka's eight-year-old child over the phone on November 21, 2025.
The threats came after an NKTV broadcast in which Sarma's son, APS officer Geetarth Dev Sarma, was accused of attacking a mourning fan of late musician Zubeen Garg in Mushalpur, Baksa District.
The event occurred during the transfer of accused men in Zubeen Garg's strange death case, including Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, from Guwahati to Baksa District Jail. The relocation had sparked unrest outside the jail facility, raising tensions in the area.
Following the alleged threats, Rana Deka filed an FIR with the Pathsala Police Station. Police officers have launched a detailed inquiry into the situation.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he is unaware of the occurrence, but that the government will ensure that justice is served and journalists can operate without fear or intimidation.
