Businessman on the run, Lalit Modi’s brother, Samir Modi arrested over rape charges

Digital Desk: Samir Modi, the brother of fugitive businessman Lalit Modi, was arrested at Delhi's airport on Thursday in connection with a rape allegation from 2019, as reported by police.

Samir, a businessman, was arrested at the airport today upon his return from a trip abroad. He was brought into prison after a FIR was filed against him at the New Friends Police Station, Delhi, under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation), according to officials.

Meanwhile, Samir's lawyer claims that the charges against him are baseless and intended to extract money from him.

Sakura Advisory's Simran Singh, representing Samir, stated that the complaint is fabricated with the intent to extort money. An FIR filed on September 10 accuses the businessman of repeated rape, threats, and cheating since 2019. The complainant alleges that Modi exploited a career opportunity pretext to force himself upon her at his New Friends Colony residence in December 2019.

The woman also claimed that, despite knowing he was already married, she was subjected to repeated harassment, assault, and blackmail under false marriage promises, according to the police.

Samir’s council read the statement, which stated, “the woman is said of been involved in a relationship with Samir Modi since 2019. Modi later lodged a complaint regarding blackmail and money extortion of Rs 50 cr following the WhatsApp convo between Samir Modi and her.”

According to the police, this issue is still being looked into.

Samir's attorneys claim that the New Friends Colony police station requested his detention at the airport in response to the LOC (Lookout Circular).

The court has remanded him to one day of police custody.
