Central YMA Leaders Meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah; Key issues Discussed

Digital Desk: Central YMA (Young Mizo Association) leaders met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Raj Bhavan on the evening of 14th of March to discuss Mizoram-related concerns.

The discussion, which addressed seven key topics, was hailed as productive, with the Union Minister noting the organization's concerns.

Tapan Deka, Director of the Intelligence Bureau of India, and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan accompanied the Union Home Minister.

Following are the major key issues tabled:

Expansion of Lengpui Airport: The officials expressed worry about the necessity to upgrade Lengpui Airport. In response, Shah indicated that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is already developing an expansion plan, with a final proposal due in three months. Construction is scheduled to begin within six months.

Additional Funding for Drug Prevention Efforts: The YMA emphasized the urgent need for more cash to address Mizoram's growing drug problem. Shah acknowledged the gravity of the situation and stated that the request would be conveyed to the Union Home Secretary for quick notice and further action.

Mizo Language Inclusion in the 8th Schedule: The YMA asked the government to campaign for the inclusion of Mizo in the Indian Constitution's 8th Schedule. Shah said that the subject is being reviewed and that various applications have been submitted. He stated that the government would look into the matter further.

Establishment of a Mizo Battalion in the BSF: The need for a distinct Mizo Battalion in the Border Security Force (BSF) was discussed. Shah added that, while a unique Mizo battalion may not be possible, a recruitment strategy is being developed to enhance the number of Mizo youth in the BSF.

Concerns about the Free Movement Regime (FMR): The YMA was vehemently opposed to the revocation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, underscoring its significance to ethnic Mizo people across the border. Shah recognized their concerns and proposed additional conversations with Home Ministry officials in New Delhi.

Convention center in Mizoram: The discussions included proposals to build a ₹5000 crore convention center in Mizoram. Shah stated that meetings with state government authorities will be required to choose the location. He stated that the matter would be taken up with the appropriate departments in New Delhi.

Humanitarian aid for refugees: The YMA sought extra humanitarian aid for refugees seeking sanctuary in Mizoram as a result of conflicts in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur. Shah promised them that the Central Government would provide additional support via the State Government.

President Lalhmachhuana headed the delegation, which included Finance Secretary MS Ralte, Assistant Secretary Fabian Lalfakawma, General Secretary Prof. Malsawmliana, and Vice President Prof. Lalnuntluanga on behalf of Central YMA.
