Delhi heavy rainfall crisis: 8, including 2 children, killed as wall collapses

Digital Desk: On Saturday, amid intense rain, a section of a wall collapsed in Delhi, killing eight people, including two children. The incident occurred in Hari Nagar, located in the south-eastern part of Delhi's Jaitpur neighbourhood.

The wall next to an old temple abruptly collapsed, trapping the residents of Jhuggis, who were primarily scrap sellers. The injured were taken to AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital immediately. But they all passed away while receiving treatment.

Shabibul (30), Rabibul (30), Muttu Ali (45), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), Hashibul, Rukhsana (6), and Hasina (7) are the names of the deceased.

According to the police, the jhuggis have been evacuated in order to stop similar incidents from happening again.

The collapse occurred while Delhi was under a red alert for the day due to heavy rain that had been falling nonstop since Friday night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the weather service, Safdarjung, Delhi's main weather station, recorded 78.7 mm of rain during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, while Pragati Maidan recorded 100 mm.

Residents welcomed the rain as a much-needed break from the heat and humidity.

However, the Yamuna in Delhi approached the warning level of 204.50 meters due to the extended rain, raising additional worries about potential flooding in low-lying areas. The agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
