West Bengal: Female university student from Arunachal humiliated

Digital Desk: West Bengal is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons.

A female university student from Arunachal Pradesh has been subjected to harassment and humiliation after her private photographs were leaked on the varsity’s WhatsApp group, allegedly by her roommate.

The incident has reportedly taken place at the Brainware University in Barasat, West Bengal.

The Kolkata Arunachal Students’ Association, or KASA, has lodged an FIR against a student identified as Bhavna Roy, accusing her of serious offences against the victim girl from Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the complaint, the victim, a BSc Media and Journalism student from Arunachal Pradesh residing at the Kazipara Girls’ Hostel, was subjected to a grave breach of privacy on August 16 at around 7:26 pm.

While the victim was showering, the accused, Bhavna Roy, allegedly accessed her roommate’s mobile phone and circulated private photographs of the victim in the university’s official WhatsApp group.

The FIR, lodged by KASA president Maga Azad on behalf of the victim, states that Roy misused her access to the phone’s password to commit the act.

The association alleged that the incident was deliberate, aimed at harassing, defaming and humiliating the student.

In addition to the alleged circulation of photographs, Roy has also been accused of repeatedly making racist remarks against the victim’s Arunachalee identity and instigating disputes within the hostel.

KASA has urged the local police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The KASA has also urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to intervene to ensure justice for the victim.
