Eid ul-Fitr 2026: India celebrates Eid today; Check out the moon sighting timing here

Digital Desk: Eid-ul-Fitr is a prominent Islamic festival that marks the end of Ramadan and is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. It has been declared that countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and numerous Gulf states would observe Eid-ul-Fitr on March 20, 2026, because the crescent moon was not visible on March 18, marking the end of Ramadan.

In India, however, the crescent moon was also not visible on the scheduled Thursday, prompting religious leaders to set the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration date for March 21, 2026. As a result, Muslims in India will fast an additional day before the Eid.

If the crescent moon is sighted on Thursday evening, Muslims across India will celebrate Eid on Friday, March 20. However, if the moon is not visible, fasting will continue for one more day, and Eid will be observed on Saturday, March 21.

Authorities and religious authorities in India will certify the final date following the moon sighting, as festival preparations continue across the country.

More than just the sighting of the moon, Chand Raat reflects the emotional and spiritual completion of a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
