Ex-Manipur CM N Biren Singh welcomes ECI move
Digital Desk: Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has welcomed the Election Commission of India’s decision to link Electors Photo Identity Cards with Aadhaar, terming it a crucial step to enhance electoral transparency and prevent malpractices.
However, he also stated that there is a need for a strict verification mechanism to eliminate fake Aadhaar holders from the voter rolls.
Taking to social media, N Biren Singh highlighted concerns over past instances of Aadhaar misuse in voter registration.
He called for thorough scrutiny, including cross-checking government records and conducting on-ground verification.
He pointed out that in 2019, Manipur’s Electoral Verification Programme identified and removed more than 67 thousand fake voters, with over 24 thousand from a single district.
It may be mentioned here that a major racket was busted last year in Manipur, where fake Aadhaar and voter ID cards were issued to illegal immigrants.
