FM Nirmala Sitharaman announces transformative development projects in Meghalaya
Digital Desk: Under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a number of groundbreaking development initiatives in Meghalaya.
The central government would provide the Meghalaya government with 50-year interest-free loans as part of the SASCI initiative, guaranteeing long-term and sustainable support for capital projects.
During her four-day visit to the northeastern state, the Finance Minister is engaging with industry stakeholders, digital payment beneficiaries, and the general public to understand regional needs and highlight government initiatives.
Major announcements under SASCI include the redevelopment of Umiam Lake, where the finance minister announced the sanctioning of Rs 99 crore for the revamp of the iconic landmark to boost tourism and environmental sustainability.
Another RS 99 crore has been allocated to develop state-of-the-art facilities for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions.
A massive investment of Rs 732 crore has been earmarked for building an international-standard football stadium at Maw-khanu, signaling a major boost for sports infrastructure in the region.
To promote women’s safety and support working professionals, Rs 132 crore has been allocated for setting up hostels across Shillong, Jowai, Byrnihat, and Tura.
Out of 750 sanctioned digital libraries, 75 have already been completed at a total cost of Rs 162 crore, promoting inclusive education and digital access.
The Finance Minister also highlighted the significant strides Meghalaya has made in welfare schemes.
