Five Manipur police personnel under zero-tolerance corruption approach were suspended

Digital Desk: The Manipur Police have suspended five officers, including an inspector, on accusations of grave misconduct, desertion of duty, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.

Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas Singh, officer-in-charge of Imphal East's Commando Unit, has been suspended with immediate effect by Director General of Police Rajiv Singh.

Four others who were suspended are named as Sub Inspector B Debson Singh and Constable Tarique Aziz of the Imphal East commando unit, Head Constable Md Rakib of the Thoubal commando unit, and Jemadar Md Amin Shah of the 7th Battalion of Manipur Rifles at Khabeisoi, Imphal East. Each officer received separate orders.

While the police statement did not elaborate on the misbehavior, officials familiar with the matter claimed the suspensions were tied to suspicions of bribery concerning the release of drug peddlers apprehended with narcotics.

One of the suspended policemen, Sub Inspector Debson Singh, was detained in 2013 for allegedly carrying drugs worth over ₹3 crore to Moreh in Tengnoupal district.

The suspensions are part of what senior officials call a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and indiscipline inside the state police force.
