For the second year in a row, the state hosted the esteemed tournament, Asia's oldest football event, underscoring Shillong's rising prominence as a regional football hub.
Local favorites Shillong Lajong FC and Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM FA) faced off in Group E on the first day, with the home team winning 6-0.
The game was the first of several Group E matches that would be held in the state capital, including the quarterfinals and semifinals.
"We are very happy and extremely proud that Shillong is one of the host cities for the Durand Cup for the second consecutive year," Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said during the inauguration.
Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, Revenue Minister Kyrmen Shylla, Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, and other high-ranking officials were also in attendance at the ceremony. Air Marshal Surat Singh and Lt Gen RC Tiwari were among the high-ranking military officials who attended the opening day festivities.
Meghalaya is getting ready for even greater things now that Shillong is back on the national sporting scene with the 39th National Games that will take place in the state in 2027.
