Origin of International Women's Day 2025

In 1975, the United Nations declared March 8 to be International Women's Day. Nonetheless, the United States and a number of European nations celebrated it for the first time on March 19, 1911.

The 1908 labor movement, in which a large number of women garment workers marched through the streets of New York, demanding voting rights, reduced working hours, and better pay, is where the concept of International Women's Day originated. The Socialist Party of America was the movement's leader.
