Manipur: CM Biren Singh Highlights Infiltration Concerns in Northeast India

Digital Desk: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has raised concerns about illegal infiltration in the northeastern states, particularly from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he emphasized the challenges faced by Assam and Tripura, which share extensive borders with Bangladesh, and warned of the potential spillover effects on Manipur if the issue remains unchecked.

Assam and Tripura have borders with Bangladesh that are 263 km and 856 km, respectively. While significant portions of these international borders have been fenced, some areas remain unfenced, posing a security challenge.

Chief Minister Singh highlighted that Assam, along with Tripura, has been grappling with infiltration problems from Bangladesh and underscored the need for vigilance.

Singh warned, "If Assam could not detect the illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh, these migrants might enter into Manipur," pointing out that Manipur shares a 204 km inter-state border with Assam.

On the eastern side, Manipur has also been facing infiltration issues from Myanmar, prompting the state to maintain heightened alertness along its western and southern regions.

The Chief Minister called for increased cooperation from both security forces and indigenous communities in monitoring and addressing infiltration. He urged local populations to remain vigilant and assist in identifying any illegal movement across the borders.

In addition to border security, Singh issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation and hate speech on social media platforms.

"No one has the right to disturb society, individuals, or any family by spreading hate speeches and false and fictitious information through social media," Singh remarked.

The government, he assured, would take strict legal action against those spreading fabricated narratives and disturbing societal harmony.
