Manipur hit by new wave of violence, 1 dead
Digital Desk: A violent clash erupted late Tuesday night in Churachandpur, Manipur. According to reports, one person was killed and several others were injured in new clashes between members of the Zomi and Hmar communities.
The violence erupted just hours after the Hmar and Zomi villages' governing bodies reached a peace pact.
Fresh battles erupted after a group of men attempted to demolish a Zomi outfit's banner in town.
Soon, crowds of men armed with batons began throwing stones, prompting security personnel to fire tear gas shells and several shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
Due to the Zomi-Hmar conflicts, the forces advised civilians to stay at home, and a curfew remains in effect throughout Manipur's Churachandpur district.
The Zomi Students' Federation imposed an indefinite shutdown on the Churachandpur district of Manipur after the incident.
Starting Wednesday morning, Churachandpur was shut down for an extended period at the request of the Zomi Students' Federation.
The student body issued a statement stating that the shutdown was necessary owing to the dangerous circumstances in Churachandpur.
The ZSF asked that all commercial and educational institutions remain closed and urged citizens to stay indoors.
The Churachandpur district government, on the other hand, has issued a public plea, imploring residents to refrain from any aggressive behavior and to cooperate with authorities.
