Manipur peace talks yield six-point resolution
Digital Desk: A significant breakthrough was achieved in the peace talks between Meitei and Kuki-Zo representatives in New Delhi, as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) unveiled a six-point resolution aimed at restoring peace in Manipur.
The resolution was announced after a meeting between the MHA and Meitei-based civil organizations, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), on April 5.
The MHA has asked civil society organizations to appeal to both sides to refrain from violence.
It added that long-term contentious issues will be addressed through dialogue and consultation with the communities.
The possibility of future rounds of dialogue to achieve a peaceful and lasting resolution was hinted at by MHA officials.
Nando Luwang, AMUCO President, described the meeting as a "positive step forward" and appreciated the MHA's efforts to find solutions.
Wherein BM Shah, acting President of FOCS emphasized that there will be no compromise on the territorial integrity of Manipur.
Worth mentioning here is that tripartite talks were held at New Delhi between the Meitei and Kuki communities from the strife-torn northeast state of Manipur that took a different turn on April 5.
Despite the adoption of six key resolutions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, the Ministry of Home Affairs expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of full cooperation from the Kuki delegation.
The ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei and the neighboring hills-based Kuki communities has claimed around 260 lives since May 2023.
Several thousand arms were looted from police stations across Manipur during the initial phase of the conflict.
