Marking Peace: First Boundary pillar installed on Assam-Meghalaya Border

Digital Desk: A new chapter in the Assam-Meghalaya border story has officially begun. In a landmark moment, the first boundary pillar was installed as part of the historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two states to resolve decades-old border disputes.

On Friday, CM Sarma posted on the social media platform 'X' that the deal is now being implemented on the ground, with border pillars being constructed in previously disputed areas.

Recalling the issue's origins and growth, CM Sarma stated, "When Meghalaya was formed in 1972, a significant portion of its border with Assam was left ambiguous, frequently resulting in chaos and tension between our states." 50 years later, in 2022, under PM Narendra Modi's leadership and in the presence of HM Amit Shah, our two states signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding to begin defining our borders. 6/12 disputed regions have been settled and designated for boundary works, and the benefits of that agreement are now being felt as the first pillars are built."

The MoU, signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marked a significant milestone in the decades-long interstate boundary problem.

The move is part of a larger phased effort to settle areas of difference between the two Northeastern states. If all goes as planned, more pillars will follow and with them, a new era of trust across the state will line.
