North Sikkim permits suspended after heavy landslides, over 1,000 tourists stranded

Digital Desk: On Thursday, the Sikkim Police Permit Cell notified us that all tourist licenses for North Sikkim will be suspended from April 25 and will continue until further notice.

"In light of the current situation, no permits will be issued for tourists planning to visit North Sikkim," stated an official notice from the Permit Cell.

The restriction comes amid heavy rainfall and huge landslides, which have left over 1,000 people trapped in the area.

Landslides in Munshithang and Lema/Bob have made key access routes to the region impassable, including the Lachen-Chungthang and Lachung-Chungthang highways.

While the route to Chungthang remains passable, authorities advise against night travel due to unpredictable weather and the potential of new landslides.

Tour operators have been instructed to cancel all trips to North Sikkim, and police are collaborating with local authorities to manage trapped tourists and prevent further movement into high-risk areas.

The disruption impacted popular sites like Lachen, Lachung, and Gurudongmar Lake.

The tourism authority has requested visitors postpone or redirect their plans to safer sites in Sikkim. Tourists are reminded to be informed through official channels and avoid depending on unapproved sources for travel information.

To help manage cancellations and notify passengers, hotels, tour guides, and local businesses have been informed of the permit suspension. Until situations improve, it is advised that individuals who have already reached Sikkim look into other options.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as weather and road conditions improve.
