Digital Desk: Sikkim celebrated its golden jubilee as India's 22nd state with a day-long celebration rooted in pride, tradition, and a renewed commitment to long-term progress.

Sikkim Statehood Day commemorates the historic event of May 16, 1975, when the former Kingdom of Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union.

A variety of lively activities took place throughout Gangtok, particularly at Paljor Stadium and Manan Kendra, bringing people and dignitaries together to commemorate the state's extraordinary journey over the last five decades, as reported by AIR.

The Sikkim government commemorated its unity and legacy with a day of festivities, which included a ceremonial procession and a tribute to former Chief Minister L.D. Kazi.

The government launched the "Festivals of Sikkim" magazine and the "Visit Sikkim" mobile app, as well as creative augmented reality activities and a time capsule. The initiative seeks to promote holistic development and the preservation of Sikkim's distinctive history.

On Sikkim's statehood day on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people and praised their achievements in a variety of fields.

The state government designated the day a public holiday, and all schools and government offices in East, West, North, and South Sikkim closed to commemorate the momentous event.

In his official greeting, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reflected on the state's political evolution, writing, "We pay homage to the legacy of the Kingdom of Sikkim, whose leadership laid the foundations of our identity, institutions, and social fabric."

The festivities will end with the final match of the Sikkim Premier League at Paljor Stadium this evening, capping off a historic day that combined tradition, pride, and hope for the future.
