Three soldiers killed in landslide in Sikkim

Digital Desk: At least three Indian Army personnel have lost their lives in a devastating landslide reported from Chaten under the Lachen district of Sikkim.

The deceased Indian Army personnel have been identified as: Havaldar Lakhbindar Singh, Lance Naik Manish Thakur and Porter Abhishek Lakhada.

Moreover, six other soldiers have also been reported to be missing following the landslide.

Meanwhile, four individuals have also been rescued from the debris with minor injuries.

Defence sources have informed that search and rescue operations are underway to locate and rescue the six personnel who remain missing.

A devastating cloudburst accompanied by incessant rainfall in North Sikkim on the night of May 30–31 has caused massive destruction to critical infrastructure, with key roads and bridges swept away by the swollen Teesta River.

The deluge triggered a snap of connectivity in multiple sectors and a response from the Border Roads Organisation.

The Teesta River rose dramatically—by an estimated 35 to 40 feet—engulfing surrounding areas and cutting off vital links between Gangtok and the remote regions of Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung.

Several sections of the highway network were either submerged or washed away entirely.
