Uttarkashi cloudburst: Death toll rises up to 5, and 150 evacuated so far- NDRF

Digital Desk: The death toll has increased to five, and several more are still missing after a cloudburst in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, caused deadly flash flooding in Dharali village on Tuesday.

Rescue efforts are underway to locate more than 100 people who have been reported missing. So far, 150 people have been rescued by personnel from the Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police, even though unrelenting rain and rugged terrain hampered operations.

Two separate cloudbursts in Dharali and Sukhi Top caused havoc throughout the region on Tuesday afternoon at 1:40 PM, with Dharali village in Uttarkashi bearing the brunt of the damage. Visuals from the area reveal broad devastation as muddy rivers ripped through villages, leaving a path of destruction.

According to officials, approximately 20-25 hotels and guesthouses were washed away, while huge areas of the Dharali market were "completely swept away."

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami remained at Ground Zero on Wednesday morning. He observed the continuing rescue operations and flew over the most severely damaged Dharali village and surrounding areas.

He also presided over a catastrophe conference at the Dehradun State Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

Dhami then met with the tragedy victims at the Uttarkashi PWD Guest House, assuring them that their lost relatives would be rescued quickly.
