‘Digital reset’, Cyber Crime wiped out by 81 per cent in Assam

Digital Desk: With an 81.2% drop in cybercrime cases over the previous two years, Assam has reached a significant milestone in cyber security. Officials are praising this achievement as a "digital reset" in the battle against online fraud and cybercrimes.

Assam saw one of the sharpest drops in cybercrime cases of any Indian state in recent memory, from 4,846 in 2021 to just 909 in 2023, according to official data.

The numbers show how well the Assam Police Cyber Crime Wing and its district-level units carried out a number of focused operations and awareness initiatives.

The sharp decline follows the government's implementation of a multifaceted strategy to reduce online fraud, including digital literacy campaigns, quick investigative procedures, and enhanced collaboration between law enforcement and financial institutions.

Additionally, the Guwahati Cyber Forensic Lab was essential in enabling faster arrests and deterrence through real-time tracking and data retrieval.

Assam's achievements demonstrate how "technology can be both a challenge and a shield," according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who oversaw the introduction of multiple cyber safety measures. He emphasized that maintaining this accomplishment still depends on citizens' ongoing awareness.

In the Northeast and beyond, Assam is quickly becoming a paradigm for proactive and preventive digital government.
