Gauhati High Court Restricts Magh Bihu Fishing Practices in Kaziranga Wetlands

Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court ruled on Wednesday that traditional community fishing during Bhogali (Magh) Bihu is prohibited in the wetlands of Kaziranga National Park.

In response to the court ruling, the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) authorities called a meeting with representatives from the Golaghat district administration, the Mohkuma government in Kaliabar, and locals to discuss the enforcement of the ban, spread knowledge of it, and explain it.

According to officials, the prohibition is only applicable within the National Park's boundaries and the marshes that surround it, which are vital breeding grounds for fish populations throughout the state.

In the meantime, all district commissioners have been urged by the Assam government's Fishery Department to set fish pricing in their areas prior to Magh Bihu and to guarantee strict adherence.
