Arunachal Pradesh: Mithun owners receive fluorescent collars for Mithuns on highways

Digital desk: In a heartfelt effort to mitigate road accidents caused by drivers hitting Mithuns straying out on the highway at night due to low visibility and to safeguard the lives of both humans and Mithuns, Niyang Pertin, CO Pangin, and Er. Okep Dai, EE PWD (Highway), distributed 200 fluorescent collars to Mithun owners in the Pangin circle of Siang District today in the presence of Gamtum Padu, Add. Dy. Commissioner, Pangin Sub-Division, and Gaon Burahs and the Mithun owners.

The fluorescent collars were distributed during a formal event at Pangin Community Hall in Siang District, signifying the admirable group effort to lower the number of traffic accidents.

Because mithuns are considered sacred bovines in Arunachal Pradesh and have cultural and traditional value for the tribal communities in the state, as well as in parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and other neighboring countries like Myanmar, China, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, officers like Pertin and Dai felt compelled to voluntarily reduce the number of Mithun fatalities as well as the loss of human lives.

In an effort to prevent mishaps and safeguard these beloved animals, known as "Mithuns," Niyang Pertin, in partnership with Er. Okep Dai, funded and acquired 200 luminous collars.
The decision is in reaction to the growing number of accidents caused by poor visibility on highways during heavy winter fog.

Free-ranging mithuns' dark coats blend into the darkness, making it difficult for cars to detect them, which frequently ends in fatal accidents and the loss of both human and animal life.

The Officer-in-Charge of Pangin Police Station also distributed informational brochures and posters encouraging road safety and responsible driving, emphasizing the significance of road awareness and careful driving.

Such actions can promote a safer and more peaceful coexistence between people, wildlife, and cattle along Arunachal Pradesh's highways. Pertin and Dai's project is an example of proactive community service.
