Assam: Govt announces Harmeet Singh as state's new Director General of Police
Digital Desk: In a dramatic shift in Assam's law enforcement leadership, the state government has officially selected Harmeet Singh, IPS (1992 batch), as the new Director General of Police. Singh's promotion to the Apex Scale at Level 17 of the Pay Matrix became effective on the date he took office.
The appointment, made by Assam's Home (A) Department, comes after GP Singh left the position.
Prior to his confirmation, Harmeet Singh had been functioning as acting DGP while simultaneously overseeing crucial positions such as Director General of Civil Defence and Commandant General of Home Guard. He continues to serve as Director of Fire and Emergency Services.

Singh graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, with a BA (Hons) in History and a Master's degree in History from Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Singh's specialties include counter-terrorism, conflict resolution, cybersecurity, de-radicalization, child protection, and emergency response.
He is well-known for setting technology-enabled policing and promoting citizen engagement through smart governance frameworks.
Singh has received numerous national awards, including the Police Medal for Gallantry, the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak, the Antrik Seva Suraksha Padak, the Kathin Seva (Special Duty) Medal, and the Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak for the Northeast Region.
