Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma Faces Bar Association Backlash; advocates proposed cancellation of CM's membership Over High Court Relocation
Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association has expressed strong objection to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's proposal to relocate the High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati.
In a major escalated action, some activists have even recommended revoking Sarma's membership in the Bar Association, citing his active role in advocating for the change.
During a general meeting, the Bar Association voted a resolution rejecting the move and scheduled a March 24 protest. The association also intends to write to the Prime Minister, President, and Chief Justice, requesting that they intervene in the situation.
While the state government has supported the move, the legal community has overwhelmingly opposed the decision.
Several senior lawyers, including A.K. Bhattacharya, K.K. Mohanta, and P.K. Goswami, spoke out in opposition, as did women's advocates Rakhi Choudhury and Banasree Gogoi. Senior lawyers Hafiz Rashid Choudhury and Arup Borbora also sharply condemned the move.
Government spokesmen Bankim Sharma and Jayanta Goswami defended the relocation plan; however, the All Assam Lawyers' Association backed the Bar Association's position.
Discussions about the potential cancellation of Chief Minister Sarma's Bar Association membership are scheduled for Thursday, adding to the conflict.
Legal circles are now investigating Sarma, who joined on November 15, 1999, with registration number 1313, since they see his involvement in the move as a direct threat to their interests.
The legal community is steadfast in its resistance as tensions rise, paving the way for a significant confrontation between the state government and the Bar Association.
