Assam, Maharashtra's need of response in connection with Ashish Chanchlani's plea to transfer FIR
Digital Desk: On February 21, the Supreme Court directed the Assam and Maharashtra governments to respond to a petition filed by YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani seeking to either quash or transfer to Mumbai a FIR filed in Guwahati on allegations of promoting obscenity through an online program.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh issued a notice and linked Chanchlani's plea to influencer Ranveer Allahbadia's pending petition.
At first, the bench informed Chanchlani's counsel that he had already been granted bail in the case.
Counsel for Chanchlani accepted that he had received the relief, but he was opposed to filing additional FIRs in connection with that one particular project.
Chanchlani, a popular Indian comedian and content creator, was granted interim bail by the Gauhati High Court.
The Guwahati Police registered the FIR on February 10 under several provisions of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhtia (BNS), Information Technology Act, Cinematograph Act, and Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The court has already begun hearing the case and labeled Chanchlani's plea. The case followed many FIRs filed against podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, over statements he made on a YouTube show.
