Assam: Orunodoi 3.0 launched, Rs 410 crore monthly to benefit 38 lakh women

Digital Desk: Orunodoi 3.0, an important upgrade of the state's premier direct benefit transfer (DBT) program dedicated to enhancing social justice and women's empowerment, was introduced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.

Currently in its third phase, the program provides regular, direct financial assistance through bank transfers to 38 lakh women beneficiaries throughout the state.

At the Veterinary Field launch ceremony in Khanapara, the Chief Minister said, "We began Orunodoi in August 2020 with Rs 830 per month for 18 lakh families. A lot of people had become impoverished during COVID-19. Beneficiaries felt that the government was on their side when they got their first payout. We subsequently raised the sum to Rs 1,000 in 2021 and added 10.54 lakh additional families to the coverage in November 2022."

Each beneficiary will now receive Rs 1,250 per month under Orunodoi 3.0. The Chief Minister declared that direct bank transfers would be used to disburse more than Rs 410 crore each month. It is anticipated that the rollout, which is happening concurrently in 25,000 Assamese locations, will increase the financial independence of women in both urban and rural households.

"The benefits ought to rise in tandem with the number of beneficiaries. Therefore, starting on November 1, we will be implementing a new plan. In addition to rice, each ration card holder will receive sugar, salt, and pulses at reduced prices. Under the new cooking gas assistance program, we will also give Rs 250 per gas cylinder," the chief minister said.

CM Sarma declared that Orunodoi Assistants would be assigned to each development block to help beneficiaries and handle problems locally in order to facilitate a more seamless implementation. Beneficiaries can use the dedicated helpline number that will be announced soon or get in touch with the block-level assistant if they run into problems.

The benefit can be passed on to the following eligible family member in the event of an Orunodoi beneficiary's death," he stated. The October installment will be given to beneficiaries within hours of the launch, the Chief Minister added, and starting next month, payments will be made on the tenth of each month.

"This is not just about financial assistance, it's about empowering women and restoring dignity to households through direct government support," Sarma said, emphasizing Orunodoi as a "model for other states to follow."
