Assam: Sribhumi's Cheragi Reserve Forest under threat from encroachers, forest department issues eviction notice
Digital Desk: Individuals staying unlawfully in Cheragi's restricted forest area in Sribhumi district have received formal eviction warnings from the Forest Department. The agency has ordered the encroachers to evacuate the forest property within one month, or face legal action, including the demolition of their structures.
According to the official notice, the inhabitants illegally entered protected forest property, established residential structures, and engaged in farming activities, resulting in environmental degradation and injury to the reserved forest.
"You are hereby informed that you have illegally trespassed into a reserved forest area, occupied forest land, constructed houses, and carried out cultivation, thereby causing damage to the reserved forest," according to the letter.
The government has also cautioned that failure to comply with the direction may result in legal action under Section 72(c) of the Assam Forest Regulation, which addresses unauthorized occupation and misuse of forest land.
Local people have been given one month from the date they received the notification to voluntarily depart the land.
