Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma resigns from Gauhati High Court Bar Association
Digital Desk: Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister, withdrew from the Gauhati High Court Bar Association on 30 April, citing a conflict of interest.
The resignation stems from the association's resistance to the proposed judicial township in Rangmahal, North Guwahati, which was sanctioned by the Gauhati High Court.
Sarma considers that the relocation is critical due to the present High Court's space limits and lack of contemporary facilities. He underlined the government's support for the initiative, despite its high expenses.
He further denied charges of political advantage, stating that the site was chosen by a high-powered committee and is outside his constituency.
He emphasized the long-term benefits of the new township for the legal community and proposed converting the current High Court into a museum.
Sarma stated that his resignation was required to prevent a confrontation and promote judicial reform.
