Assam Congress remains closed in Sribhumi due to a Rs 4 lakh bribe allegation
Digital Desk: The Assam Pradesh Congress district headquarters in Sribhumi, Indira Bhavan, remained closed on Tuesday, May 20, following the release of a viral video purporting to show a financial transaction between a senior party leader and a ticket aspirant.
According to sources, the dispute centers on an alleged Rs 4 lakh bribe made by Achan Choudhury, a ticket-denied candidate for the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad seat, to Assam Pradesh Congress General Secretary Aminur Rashid Choudhury in exchange for a party nomination.
The transaction, which was purportedly recorded on film and included audio excerpts of phone calls asking for a refund, has since gone viral on social media, causing significant dismay.
Despite multiple attempts, Choudhury alleges he was unable to retrieve the money or contact the Congress leader. After receiving no response from party leadership, the unhappy candidate has legally filed a complaint against Aminur Rashid Choudhury.
Sribhumi District Congress General Secretary Subrata Dev expressed concern about the situation and urged the Pradesh Congress to take immediate and effective action. "If stern measures are not taken against those responsible, it could seriously demoralize party workers at the grassroots level," he said.
The scandal has had a visible impact on party operations. Indira Bhavan remained closed on Tuesday, indicating internal tension and potential damage control inside the state Congress unit.
