Baksa District Jail incident: Himanta Biswa Sarma visits victims, hands over cheques for medical treatment
Digital Desk: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Baksa today (October 21) and spoke with those who were injured in last week's violent clashes outside the Baksa district jail.
CM Sarma gave the injured people, Dipak Medhi and Bidyut Kalita, cheques totalling Rs 2 lakh each to help with their continued medical care.
The step by CM Sarma comes after the incident on Wednesday, October 15, when five major suspects in the unsolved death of Assam's music icon, the late Zubeen Garg, were taken to the Baksa District Jail under strict police escort, and tensions erupted outside the building. Amidst increased security measures, the accused Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandeepan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya arrived in a convoy of police cars. The incident injured at least 21 people—including 10 police officers, 12 journalists, and multiple civilians—and this action was taken.
A few victims who had been shot were sent to AIIMS, Guwahati, for more advanced care, while two of the seriously wounded civilians were moved to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
In addition, all five of the accused are being closely monitored in the Baksa District Jail's recently renovated high-security unit.
