Bengaluru City University in Karnataka to be renamed in honour of former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh

Digital Desk: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced during his budget speech in the state assembly on Thursday that the Bengaluru City University will be renamed after the name of former PM and late Dr Manmohan Singh.

Notably, this will be the country's first university to be named after Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024.

The announcement about the state-run Bengaluru City University (BCU), formerly known as Bengaluru Central University, came on March 7, 2025, when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah delivered his record 16th budget in the Legislative Assembly.

The university, founded in 2017 and renamed in 2020, is ready for another rebranding under the Congress-led administration.

As part of this endeavor, Government Arts College and Government RC College will be incorporated as constituent colleges of the university, according to Siddaramaiah.

Previously, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced intentions to create a research and study institute at Bangalore University (BU) to honour Singh's efforts.

The project aims to teach pupils about the former Prime Minister's significant economic changes and their impact on India's development.
