Assam Government Reviews 52 Proposals for Clause 6 Implementation
Digital Desk: The Assam government held discussions with the All Assam Students' Union regarding the Biplab Kumar Committee's recommendations for implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
The meeting was chaired by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, and it reviewed 52 recommendations, with 40 falling under state jurisdiction and 12 requiring coordination between the state and central governments.
Utpal Sharma, president of the All Assam Students' Union, stated that the discussions centered on "the probable parts" that the state government could implement on its own.
Clause 6 of the Assam Accord of 1985 pledges constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Assamese people. The Biplab Kumar Committee was constituted to propose solutions for executing this law.
The talks are the most recent attempt to address long-standing concerns for the preservation of indigenous Assamese identity, a sensitive topic that has impacted the state's political landscape for decades.
