Valentine's greetings were popular in the Middle Ages. Charles, Duke of Orléans, wrote the first recorded Valentine poetry in 1415, dedicating it to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London following the Battle of Agincourt. This poem is still part of the British Library's manuscript collection in London.

It is also thought that King Henry V commissioned the poet John Lydgate to write a Valentine's card for Catherine of Valois.
