Delhi CM Atishi Resigns Day After AAP's hefty defeat
Digital Desk: A day after the BJP swept the Delhi Assembly election, incumbent Chief Minister Atishi met with Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena today and handed over her resignation. Mr Saxena also dissolved the National Capital's Seventh Legislative Assembly.
In the 70-member Assembly, the BJP won 48 seats, 40 more than its total of 8 in 2020. The AAP, which received 62 seats in 2020, was reduced to 40 this time. Congress was unable to come up with anything.
The AAP's top brass, including national convener Arvind Kejriwal and senior leaders Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj, all lost in the election. Ms Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat.
The BJP has returned to power in Delhi after a gap of over 26 years. A remarkable swearing-in event is scheduled for next week, following the Prime Minister's return from a trip to the United States.
For over five months, Atishi served as Delhi's chief minister. She took over in September last year after Mr Kejriwal resigned as chief minister after being given bail in a corruption case related to Delhi's now-defunct liquor law.
