Delhi Railway Station Stampede: UP Stations On Alert, Probe underway
Digital Desk: A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday killed at least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, and injured more than a dozen more. The stampede was prompted by a sudden rush of passengers rushing to board trains for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
According to an official, several persons slid and fell on others while descending from a footbridge to platform numbers 14 and 15 via steps.
The railways announced that a high-level investigation into the "unfortunate incident" has been launched.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences for the loss of lives.
A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station has prompted several stations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to issue warnings. Police are inspecting Charbagh Railway Station.
They've compiled a list of trains headed to Prayagraj and are contemplating ways to manage the mob and also reviewing CCTV video. The ongoing Maha Kumbh has resulted in a tremendous increase in foot traffic on railways.
