Flood in Assam wreaks havoc, 58,000 people affected; Brahmaputra breaches danger mark
Digital Desk: On June 1, Assam's Brahmaputra River reached record levels in Dibrugarh district, as heavy rain continued to fall over the state and neighboring regions.
The heavy rain caused floods in low-lying areas, drowning homes and farmland throughout the district's most vulnerable sections.
Meanwhile, in Guwahati, major waterlogging was reported in various districts on Sunday as heavy rains drenched the city.
Earlier, eight people passed away in Assam as a result of floods and landslides, according to officials.
According to a report released on May 31 by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three people perished in floods and five died in landslides.
Following frequent and heavy rainfall in Assam and nearby states, 175 villages under 20 revenue circles in the state's 12 districts--Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, and Karbi Anglong. Kamrup, Biswanath, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong West were all devastated by the state's earliest floods.
According to the ASDMA flood report, the first period of flooding affected 58,091 persons across 12 districts. 791.32 hectares of cropland have been inundated by flooding.
Nearly 7000 flood victims are seeking refuge in relief camps and distribution centers put up by the local administration.
The district administration has established 16 assistance camps and distribution centers in flood-affected communities.
Rescue efforts in flood-affected areas are carried out by the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local government.
22 roads, one bridge, three river banks, four additional shorelines, irrigation canals, school buildings, and Anganwadi centers were all devastated by flood waters.
According to the report, urban floods in the districts of Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Cachar, and Kamrup (M) affected 9865 people.
