Gauhati Press Club Elections Put on Hold as Assam Mourns demise of Assam’s heartthrob Zubeen Garg
Digital Desk: The Gauhati Press Club Election Committee has announced that the scheduled 2025–27 elections will be postponed indefinitely in response to the tragic death of beloved music icon Zubeen Garg.
Zubeen Garg's sudden death made the committee move the voting date from October 10 to October 25. The elections have now been postponed without a new date, citing the ongoing mourning in Assam.
In a notification dated October 1, 2025, the committee said, "Journalists, including members of the Election Committee, have not yet moved past this grief, and the people of Assam are still grieving the loss of Zubeen Garg."
While acknowledging that it is against democratic principles to postpone a democratic process indefinitely, the committee assured that a new election date will be announced as soon as conditions are judged proper for a peaceful voting process.
