Gujarat: 17 killed in massive fire after blast at firecracker factory in Deesa
Digital Desk: A large fire broke out after an explosion at a firecracker plant and warehouse in Gujarat's Deesa on Tuesday, killing 17 workers, according to officials.
The fire broke out at Deepak Traders, causing confusion and impeding rescue efforts when the factory's slab fell, according to District Collector Mihir Patel. Firefighters from the Deesa Municipality arrived on the site, along with 108 ambulances.
Patel first reported six fatalities, but the death toll increased as firemen extinguished the fire and examined the rubble.
Initial studies point to a boiler explosion as the source of the incident. Parts of the building collapsed because the bomb and the ensuing fire were so intense.
The fire was extinguished, and cooling measures were being implemented. The rubble was being cleared by crews.
According to officials who spoke to news agency PTI, a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was also present to help with the rescue efforts.
